Reading Buddies

Toa and Izzy are year 6s from Mrs Dixon's class. They are Room 7's wet day monitors, and they have also started coming to our class to read to the children each week.  The children really enjoy having older students read to them

Swimming on Friday is such an enjoyable way to end another week of learning in Room 7!

Wetas!

Over the last few weeks Room 7 has been inquiring into insects.  Last week we decided to make a giant weta. The children worked together to problem solve what materials to use, how to construct and decorate it so it looked like a real weta.  The children have become weta 'experts' and have been eagerly sharing their knowledge with visitors to our class.

The completed weta is now hanging on Room 7's back wall. Please don't be scared when you visit our class!

Daffodil Day and Mrs Bartlett's Birthday

What a busy day today! Not only was it Daffodil Day, but it was also Mrs Bartlett's birthday.  Before the Daffodil Day concert, Room 7 made her a birthday card and delivered it wearing our Daffodil Day head bands.  We also sang Mrs Bartlett 'Happy Birthday'. Yes, Room 7 is the cutest class in the school!

Tennis Ball Maths!

Mrs Rush was given a whole lot of tennis balls by Koru Tennis Club.  She had a problem that she needed our help with.  She wanted to know how many tennis balls there were so she could work out how many to give to her teacher friends.

We started to count them in ones but there were so many, and we got interrupted and mixed up.  We problem solved and decided to put them into groups of ten. We all took turns at making groups of ten. Mrs Rush helped us to count in tens. There were 232 tennis balls!

Insects!

Over the last couple of weeks we have been learning about insects.  Look at what we have been up to!

It's My Bread!

This week we read the books 'It's My Bread', 'The Little Red Hen' and our shared poem 'I Like My Bread.

On Friday we made toast. While we waited for the toaster we chose our topping. Then we spread the topping on the toast. Next we sat with our buddy and ate our toast. Yum!

'Rumpus at the Vet'

Over the last couple of weeks Room 7 has had an animal care area set up in class.  This was based on the books 'Rumpus at the Vet' and 'Greedy Cat and the Sneeze'.

A big thank you to Mrs Rush's daughter Melissa, who gave us many of the resources for this activity.

Leaves, Leaves, Leaves!

Room 7 had such fun at school today.  Mr Parnell (caretaker) took time out of his busy Monday to make a huge pile of leaves for us to play in. Afterwards we drew and wrote about our experiences.

Tui Friday Afternoons

Most Friday afternoons the whole Tui Team participate in Play Based Learning on the field.

The children enjoy the opportunity to interact with other Tui children, use equipment in different ways, and generally have fun.  What a great way to finish off a busy school week!

'It's My Bread'

Room 7's shared book this week has been 'It's My Bread'. On Thursday afternoon we made toast, and on Friday the children wrote about the experience with Mrs Walsh.

Pop into class and have a look at the new wall display with all the children's photos and writing.

Loose Parts

This week the arrival of a new 'loose part' - an old steering wheel from one of Mrs Rush's son's cars has ensured that the children have been on some great imaginary journeys in a variety of vehicles!

Mrs Gregory

On Tuesdays children who are just about ready to start school visit for the morning.  Mrs Gregory also visited.  She looks like she's having lots of fun in Room 7!

Swimming Term 2 Week 1

The children were very excited to go swimming today.  They all had a great time, and it was a nice way to end their first week of school.

Insects! Insects! Insects!

This week we have been learning about insects, and we have an insect discovery table in class. We have enjoyed sorting the insects and making places for them to live.

Ice creams!

Our shared book this week was 'The Giant's Ice Cream'.  Yesterday we spooned yoghurt into moulds.  Mrs Rush put them in the school freezer so that we could have our own ice creams this afternoon after a busy (and hot) day at school.

Mrs Wishy Washy

We have been reading the shared book 'Mrs Wishy Washy' this week. Instead of mud (as in the book) we made gloop.  The children really enjoyed the sensory experience of getting their hands into it and squishing, squeezing, dripping, oozing!

Junior Sandpit

Mr Parnell (the school caretaker) was busy working on the junior sandpit on Friday. Mr Parnell's dog was there to 'help'.

We can't wait for the sandpit to be finished!

Tennis Ball Maths!

Mrs Rush was given a huge bag of tennis balls from her tennis club!  We did a Maths investigation to find out how many there were.  We worked out that it was tricky to count them all one by one as we might get mixed up or forget what number we got up to.

After talking about the problem we decided to put the balls into groups of ten.  Everyone got to have a turn at making a group of ten.  Some of us got two turns because there were so many balls. We learned about skip-counting in tens to work out how many balls there were.  At the end we had one tennis ball left, which wasn't enough to make a group of ten.

There were 141 tennis balls altogether!

Mrs Rush emailed the other teachers to share the balls with them.
